Nokia shares up 2 pct on shipment of N8 model aimed at challenging iPhone and Blackberry | StarTribune.com

- Nokia Corp. said Thursday it has begun shipments of its N8 model, a handset that aims to challenge RIM's Blackberry and Apple's iPhone in the smart phone market.

The news pushed Nokia stock up 2 percent, to close at euro7.35 ($10.03) on the Helsinki Stock Exchange.

Nokia said deliveries would begin immediately for pre-orders of the touch screen model, which had received "the highest amount of consumer pre-orders in Nokia history." Worldwide availability would be "in the coming weeks" and will vary by country, Nokia said.

The N8, which looks like an iPhone, features a 12-megapixel digital camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a 3.5 inch display. It is built on a new version of the Symbian software with photo uploading connections to social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

The expected retail price of the handset at dealers was not given, but Nokia said on its Web site that it could be ordered for euro500 ($680).

QNX OS Likely To Power Future BlackBerry Devices - Yahoo! News

Research In Motion is planning to transition its BlackBerry smartphones to the Neutrino QNX operating system it acquired last April, according to media reports. Although the BlackBerry maker has not officially confirmed this, RIM Vice President Alan Panezic said it would be a "logical conclusion" and Vice President Alan Brenner said there was no reason "to rule it out," according to web site Intomobile.

It's hardly surprising that RIM has been thinking about taking advantage of some long-term synergies based on the OS expertise in the separate BlackBerry and QNX software-engineering teams. Apple made major changes in the microprocessor and OS platforms for its Mac line at different times and has been successful, noted Al Hilwa, director of applications software development at IDC.

"At some point every technology vendor has to make a hard decision as to whether to carry on with what they have or to reboot with a new strategy," Hilwa said. "The trick is how to manage such transitions."

Skipping a Beat

The key for RIM is coming up with a transition strategy that includes the tools, simplified or automated app migrations, and common APIs for the old and the new platforms. "In this case, it looks like RIM's focus on its WebWorks platform to shift development on BlackBerry phones to the web is one of those strategies," Hilwa said.

Science Fiction Blogs: Blackberry vs. Iphone 4?

Well I am currently tired of my Verizon Wireless EnV Touch, and I am having a change in heart about the new phone I will have for the next two years. In other words, in your opinion, Blackerry or Iphone 4. Most of us are Blackerry users, or former Iphone users. The bigger question is; which one is better? All over the internet there have been polls beyond polls about which cellular device is better. Since I do not want to bore you will the statistics of both, I will just reveal to you my personal opinions about each phone. Just about everyone in my high school walk around with the small computer aka 'The Blackberry'.  I have seen more Blackberry coverers than I have seen pairs of Nike shoes. Blue rubber ones, glittery hard covers, the colors of rainbow, anything you could possibly think of, is a cover for the Blackberry. I personally think it is unique considering it is truly a mini computer. The apps you are aloud to download, the ablitity to BBM (Black Berry Messenger) is the new Facebook of the new generation. The only problem would be the fact that every time your phone freezes, you have to take the battery out for at least 5 seconds. The little keys on the Blackberry is a disadvantage for those who cant see that well. Oh and the fact that little kids are walking around with Blackberries, like their lives are soooo hectic and busy that they have to mark in their Blackberry calender's their next business meeting or the fact that they have to connect their company's software to their Blackberry. OMG what was I thinking? Of course kids need all of that stuff. Now time for the Iphone 4. Brand new from this summer. Yes, millions were standing outside the Apple Store in Somerset to buy an Iphone 4 eventhough it has just about everything the Iphone 3s had. Oh did I also mention that they were standing in line to buy a phone that would break within the hour of them having it on? One of my friends (Iphone 4 owner) told me that everytime he would touch the top of his phone (basically the atenna of the phone), he would loose his signal. Apple also reveal that the same problem was occurring for majority all of the Iphone 4's. Well I use to play on my friend's old Iphone 3, and I like the technology update it has. The touch effects, and the ability to listen to music at the same time, with the abilities of your Ipod and a cell phone ALL IN ONE! Then again, I showed the price of a descent Iphone and she laughed in my face. So you get the picture on that one. Therefore, I think the winner goes to......... VERIZON WIRELESS DROID X! Ha tricked ya

little mistake with the Facebook posting . Kevin went hands on with it way back in October of 2009 and finally, just like the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 it's been spotted more times then a leopard. Now, here are rolling into February full on and no release of the BlackBerry Tour 2 / 9650 is to be had as of yet.

Mobile Phones Blog Mix: WebWorks, enabling web applications to BlackBerry applications

Development will be the same as native BlackBerry application (which uses Java). In fact, they could make the Super Apps as well. Super Apps is a term from RIM for a application that uses more ability features of a BlackBerry device. A Super Apps can integrate with features such as calendar, push email and others to bring more functionality.

To encourage WebWorks, RIM decided to make an Open Source project. WebWorks source Code can be viewed at http://github.com/blackberry.

According to Brenner, WebWorks can be useful for small organizations that want to bring the application on the BlackBerry. Later, applications created with WebWorks can be distributed via AppWorld well.

AT&T To Offer Two New BlackBerries: Curve 3G, Pearl 3G - Tech Trader Daily - Barrons.com

AT&T (T) today said it plans to offer two additional phones from Research in Motion (RIMM): the BlackBerry Pearl 3G, and the BlackBerry Curve 3G.

• The Curve 3G will show online and in stores “in time for the holidays.” The phone will sell for $99.99, with no rebate required. The phone is “BlackBerry 6 ready.” The phone has a full QWERTY keyboard and an optical trackpad, GPS, video camera and supports up to 32 GB memory cards.
• The Pearl 3G starts shipping October 17, and will be priced at $149.99, no with no rebates required. It likewise has a QWERTY keyboard and optical trackpad, but in a smaller package; it weight just 3.3 ounces.

RIMM today is up $1.20, or 2.6%, to $48.11.
